26′ x 48′ Barn

We decided to step back a few months for this post. Last October we completed about a month long build of a 26′ wide x 48′ long barn. After discussing the the clients needs and desires for the building, we decided on a stick framed structure. This method met the budget as well as the time frame with winter soon approaching.

The clients had cleared the land where the barn would sit. Site work was completed and the footings, frost wall, and floor were poured. Building materials from the local lumber yard were ordered and delivered, we just needed the weather to cooperate.

Exterior walls were framed and stood up in a two day time period. We decided to go with an engineered floor system to allow for a clear 26′ span on the first floor (no posts). This worked well considering the front portion of the barn would be used for parking vehicles and equipment as well as storage. The back portion was designated to a woodworking shop.

With the second floor system in place and decked over, it was time to frame the gables and set rafters. Aside from a very wet week of framing, all went well and the metal roofing was in place protecting the frame from the weather.

Next step in the build was installation of the exterior trim and siding. We decided on a veined shiplap product that was produced from a local mill and met the look we were after.
With the siding, windows, and doors installed it was time to frame the interior wall and stairs to the second floor. The woodworking shop in the back portion of the barn was insulated as well as the interior walls finished to allow for a bright and comfortable work space.

Final step before handing barn over to the clients would be the barn doors on the front. The same siding used on the building was installed on door blanks to blend seamlessly with the structure.

This was a great fall project despite the couple weeks of wet New England weather. It is a great feeling to step back at the end of each day and see what was accomplished. Overall great project, could not have asked for better clients to work with. We are happy to say the barn was finished on time and within budget as well as knowing the clients are 100% satisfied.
